The Best (and worst) Crochet Wig Caps

Different Crochet Wig Caps: How to Choose the Best One for You

When it comes to making your own crochet wig, the type of wig cap you use matters more than you might think. The cap you choose will affect how your wig fits, how it looks, and how easy it is to install the hair.

Here are a few different crochet wig caps you can use and what makes each one unique:

Mesh Dome Cap
This is one of the most popular options. It has small holes that make it easy to crochet hair through. The mesh is breathable, so your scalp stays cooler, and the dome shape gives you a snug fit. Some mesh dome caps have an elastic band around the edges to help them stay in place.

If you prefer a flat, close-to-the-head fit, this is a great choice.

Crochet Mesh Cap with Adjustable Straps and Combs
This cap is similar to the mesh dome cap but comes with extra features. The adjustable straps in the back allow you to tighten or loosen the cap, and the combs help secure it to your hair underneath.

If you plan to wear your crochet wig often and want it to feel extra secure without needing wig glue or tape, this is a good option.

Spandex Dome Cap
This cap doesn’t have holes, so you’ll need to create your own openings by sliding your crochet hook through the fabric. It can be a little more time-consuming to install the hair, but the fit is very snug and smooth.

If you want your wig to look very flat against your scalp, you may prefer a spandex dome cap.

Open Wefted Wig Cap
This is the same style cap used for making traditional wefted wigs. It has open spaces between the wefts, which can be used to crochet hair in.

These caps are very lightweight and breathable, but keep in mind that the sections without wefts are larger, so you’ll have to plan how you fill in gaps.

Full Lace Cap
While not as common for crochet wigs, some people use full lace caps to get the look of hair coming straight from the scalp all over the wig. This requires a lot more time and patience, but it can give you a very natural finish.

Which Cap Should You Choose?

It really depends on the look and fit you want:

  • If you’re a beginner, start with a mesh dome cap or crochet mesh cap with straps for easy installation.

  • If you want a super flat and snug fit, try a spandex dome cap.

  • If you want maximum breathability, consider an open wefted cap.

  • If you’re ready for a more advanced project, experiment with a full lace cap.

No matter which one you choose, remember that it takes a little trial and error to find what works best for you.
