Wig Tips and Tutorials for Beginners

Headband Crochet Wig made with Kima Braid Ocean Wave

Key Tips to Keep in Mind While Making This Headband Crochet Wig

Tip 1: Always point your latch hook upward

No matter which section of the wig you are working on, always point the latch hook toward the front or top of the wig cap. If you are working on the back of the cap, your latch hook should always be going upward.

Tip 2: Space your hair out

Your first row sets the tone so make sure you space that hair out quite a bit. Start with at least two inches between each piece. Then when you start your next row, place each piece of hair between the two pieces from the previous row. This is called the bricklaying method and it applies not just in the back but throughout the entire wig. It may look like a lot of space at first but the hair in the middle and the crown will cover it all. And remember, you can always go back and add more.

Tip 3: Do not skip past several holes

If you do this throughout the wig your cap may end up too small. However if your crochet wig cap feels too bulky on the wig block and you feel it will be too big, you can skip past several holes while working in the back. Do this for about one row, crocheting the hair three to five times to help tighten up the cap and make it a little smaller. But do this with caution because you do not want your cap to end up too small.

Tip 4: Use the Knotless Method throughout

While attaching your crochet hair to the cap, only pull one end of the hair through the loop instead of both. This is the knotless method. It will help cover up the knots throughout your wig and in my opinion this also creates a fuller look without having to use as much hair.

Tip 5: Take your time and have fun

Do not overthink it. And remember, I am always here if you need me. ๐Ÿ’•

What I love about it: Kima Ocean Wave is my absolute favorite crochet hair. It gives bundles, has a beautiful yaki texture, and it is just gorgeous. It comes in a variety of colors and lengths and there are no issues splitting the hair. You can split this hair as many times as you want without it getting crazy or out of control. Love it. Highly recommend it.

What to keep in mind: This hair is a labor of love. It does like to unravel while you are working with it. Here are a few tips to make it easier:

  •
Use small pieces while crocheting to prevent unraveling. It will take longer but it is so worth it
  •
If you prefer to use bigger pieces, take a few strands from both ends and tie a knot at least twice to lock the hair in place. I have a video showing exactly how to do this and I will link it below
  •
Do not cut a bang with this hair. I tried it and it was a hot mess. I had to remove all of the hair that I cut and reinstall it. Just trust me on this one
  •
This hair works great for a lace part, natural part, or full coverage wig. Just skip the bang

Coming soon: I have not tried her on yet but I will be back with a video showing how I add layers if needed, how I break the hair down, and all the things. Stay tuned!

About the Cap

I recommend this cap for crochet wigs. The holes are smaller than an average crochet wig cap so it is easier to use a smaller latch hook. I will link the cap I purchased from Amazon as well as a multipack of latch hooks you can also find on Amazon.

The latch hook I am using in the video I picked up from my local beauty supply store so it is not the same set on Amazon, but you can absolutely use one of the latch hooks that comes in the pack!

This headband crochet Wig cap has adjustable straps in the back and the band on the cap has a nice silky material. However I was not a fan of the Velcro strap in the back so I cut it off. Try it though, maybe it will work for you.

Keeping the wig in place:

  •
I did need to add a comb to this wig to keep it on my head
  •
If you are not able to wear combs you can use hair pins. Just be careful with the pins
  •
If you do not want to use combs or hair pins or if you do not have hair, a wig grip will keep this wig in place

Finishing touches: If you are not a fan of the black band or if you want a little razzle dazzle, you can purchase cute headbands to cover it.

This is a great wig to throw on and go. If you want your hairline and edges out just smooth them back and apply your favorite product. If you do not have hair just pull the band down and secure the wig with a wig grip and you are good to go.
